FEATURED PRESENTER

Dr. Kalene Colwell
I'm a 2020 graduate from the University of Utah School of Dentistry. Like more current grads, I graduated with minimal experience of around 8 crowns, a handful of surgical extractions, and root canals; I wasn't exactly oozing with confidence straight out of school.
The first job I worked at was a community health center in Libby, Montana. Hoping to gain some experience before setting off to private practice. Here, while the expectations were hard to keep up with seeing 1 patient every 30 minutes, along with checking on 2 hygienists, it did teach me to be efficient with my time and made me really good at extractions. After 3 years at the health center, I was an associate for 1.5 years in a bigger town in Montana before buying the office, which I now have, which is back in Libby. Libby has a population of 3,500, while the entire county has about 20,000.
The office, when I purchased it in January 2025, was 2 days a week and doing about 450,000 in production a year before write-offs. The office had a good reputation, and with those numbers, even if I could just replicate the production but scale up to 4 days, it would be a reasonable living. In the last 6 months, my personal production averages about 120k with another 30k from hygiene.
I attribute my success to the team around me, both in my office and in the small DSO I own. My front desk is solid, my 2 hygienists are very hard working and help close treatment, and my assistants are great about explaining treatment plans to patients. While my DSO helped negotiate pretty solid reimbursements from a few insurance plans that I take and handles the business side for me, so I consider myself spoiled. In my community, I feel my patients do rely on their benefits quite a lot, so I'm happy to provide that service of being in-network for them.
I've been following Nachos since Dental school, so I'm very honored to be interviewed!
